What would human civilization look like after a billions-dead catastrophe? “End of the world” movies almost universally fail to confront that. Do we need to do better?
My choice has got to be Roland Emmerich’s disaster of a disaster flick, 2012. Honestly, I never tire of how stupendously, entertainingly awful it is.
A same-old tale of apocalypse knows we’ve seen this all before, and so centers human drama over disaster porn. It has nothing new to say, but at least it says it well, with notes of horrific grace.
Cornball disaster-porn melodrama… in 3D! Dumb, insulting, and bloodless. It’s Hollywood’s subconscious death wish brought to life, in more ways than one.
A movie to make you despair of the found-footage conceit (if you weren’t already). Suddenly Twister looks like Shakespeare.
Postcard-pretty, unusual for a science fiction flick, but shockingly derivative.
It doesn’t necessarily have to be from a terrible film. I can imagine someone otherwise loving Citizen Kane who thinks the discovery of Rosebud’s identity at the end is howlingly idiotic.
Pretty much the dullest alien invasion movie ever, featuring an uninteresting incursion by nondescript aliens doing boring things and not even blowing shit up in exciting new ways.
