A huge disappointment, crude and simple compared to Aardman’s earlier, more sophisticated and multilayered work. No satire or subversion, just a bog-standard triumph-of-the-underdog story.
Paints an impressionistic canvas of unease and disquiet, of hope and wonder, filled with glorious music. Magical… though sometimes it’s black magic.
Charming in that gloriously detailed Aardman way, but with its simple slapstick humor, it’s strictly for the littlest tykes.
Doctor Wallace and K9 Gromit?
Implies that science! and scientists! could be fun! and adventurous! Oh noes, the kiddies! Brainwashed into thinking science is awesome! Who shall protect them from such horrors?
Isn’t The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists! way zanier and infinitely more awesome than The Pirates! Band of Misfits?
Is there sweet? Absolutely. But it is cut with funny: sometimes wicked, sometimes manic, often hysterical, always clever funny. And a whole lotta poignant, too.
I saw Arthur Christmas last weekend and really liked it but that might be because Justin Bieber had yet to warble all over it.
I might not have to hate this Christmas movie.
Aardman is taking on pirates? I am so there.
