Spanks the 2016 film and sends it off to the corner to think about what it did. This one is the definite article: Gory, grim, bleakly funny. Full of feverish, anarchic energy and exhausting cynicism.
Superman, but he’s evil. That’s the whole movie. This is a depiction of violent entitled sociopathy that may think it’s critiquing toxic masculinity yet is indistinguishable from a celebration of it.
Thinks it’s edgy and transgressive, the punk little brother of all those other stodgy comic-book movies, but it isn’t. It’s just slightly more candy-colored.
A one-note scenario that never ups the ante on itself, and never even bothers to use its extreme situation to send up office politics or corporate policies.
Everyone’s been talking about this. There was even a 15-second teaser to get us worked up for the main event. Which is still just an ad for a movie.
Could it be? A superhero comedy with some real bite? There hasn’t been one of those in years.
