Olympus Has Fallen

Angel Has Fallen movie review: and it can’t get up

A sad retread of The Fugitive. Dumb, pointless, confused, full of contempt for its audience, and laughably unable to convince us that Gerard Butler is an acceptable stand-in for Harrison Ford.

The Silence movie review: I have only the faintest of muted praise

Not a knockoff of that other quiet horror flick, though this familiar monster movie works hard to convince otherwise. But the terrific cast makes it worth a look, at least for Netflix subscribers.

A Nuremberg rally for 21st-century America. Pure terror porn: racist, jingoistic, thoroughly obnoxious. Donald Trump voters will love it. *sob*

Clichéd, obvious, and tired. We’ve seen this story so many times before, but rarely with such a lack of appreciation for just how unheroic its “hero” is.

It lifts an embarrassing number of beats from Die Hard… but Channing Tatum is no Bruce Willis.

A vile propagandistic action flick that shamelessly indulges fears of terrorism while also failing on a basic narrative level.

the screenwriting bible that is to blame for the tedious blandness of blockbusters

When I look at my watch during a movie, it’s because I’m checking to see if my guess about where in the runtime we are coincides with what just happened onscreen. This book is what makes that possible.
