questions

question of the day: Is two versions of a movie — one for kids and one for adults (like Hugh Jackman wants for ‘Wolverine’) — a good idea?

Would that make it too confusing to know which is the “real” version? Or would it be barely different from the “director’s cut” versions we often get on DVD?

question of the day: Can movies and television be too visually beautiful?

The Tree of Life is a “beautiful” film, even its detractors appear to agree. But so is every other TV commercial and throwaway police procedural.

question of the day: What is the most dangerous “advice” you’ve ever gleaned from a movie?

I think close to the top of the list must be the notion that you could walk calmly and slowly away from a nearby explosion without incurring severe injury.

question of the day: What is your earliest geek memory?

I remember being in first grade, and playing superheroes on the school playground during our lunch break…

question of the day: Is it too soon for a Steve Jobs biopic? Who should play him?

It’s not just theoretically inevitable, it’s already in the works.

question of the weekend: What has been your biggest or most amusing vacation fail?

Sat, Oct 08, 2011

I so wanted to do a Foursquare check-in from Sherwood Forest, and then eat my lunch of local bread, cheese, and rare-breed ham under a tree, like Robin Hood might have done…

question of the day: Can a director who doesn’t know how to tell a story still be called a strong visual filmmaker?

Fri, Oct 07, 2011

Isn’t it all about telling a story?

question of the day: Has the surprising success of ‘The Lion King in 3D’ opened Pandora’s box office?

Are we going to see a mad rush by all the studios to convert old — and not so old — movies to 3D and get them back out in multiplexes? Would that be an entirely bad thing? Would it be better if we just got unconverted classics back on a big screen?

question of the day: Should the ‘Simpsons’ cast take 45 percent pay cuts so the show can continue?

Wed, Oct 05, 2011

Regardless of what you might think of the quality of the show lately — I think it’s been off the mark for years now — that’s sorta beside the point.

question of the day: Where are all the benign alien first-contact stories?

Is this just too optimistic a scenario for our anxious, paranoid times? Or is something else going on?
