questions

question of the day: Does a movie have to be *about* anything?

Wed, Sep 21, 2011

Of course, even movies that aren’t about anything are still sort of about something. But is a silly story enough, if it’s done right?

question of the day: Is the Hollywood Walk of Fame a relic of yesteryear… and how could we update it?

Tue, Sep 20, 2011

Jon Cryer got a star on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood yesterday. I’ve got nothing against the guy, but I thought: How quaint! Walk of Fame? So 1950s.

question of the day: What do you think of the Emmy Awards results?

Mon, Sep 19, 2011

The Emmy Awards for excellence in American television were handed out last night, and one of the biggest winners wasn’t American at all: Downton Abbey…

question of the weekend: What great things will future generations miss out on?

You’ve heard, I’m sure, about the Mindset List that Beloit College in Wisconsin distributes every year to clue in its professors about the assumptions and prejudices of the incoming freshmen for the new academic year…

question of the day: What is so genuinely special about ‘Star Wars,’ ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark,’ and ‘Back to the Future’?

Tim Walker at The Independent made me cry yesterday, for reminding me how the movies of my childhood made me fall in love with movies, and for suggesting that such movies may never come again…

question of the day: Why is there such a voracious appetite for naked-celebrity photos?

Thu, Sep 15, 2011

Do they make us feel better about ourselves? Is it just plain and simple purience? Do fans feel “entitled” to see a celeb naked after being teased with legit, posed, nearly naked images of the same celeb over and over again? Something else?

question of the day: What actors would you ban from working in Hollywood, and for what offense?

Wed, Sep 14, 2011

Of course, we have no power to ban anyone, and we’re not even calling for anyone to actually be banned. We’re just daydreaming about those people we’d like to think could no longer enjoy their fame and fortune.

question of the day: What changes would you actually like to see in the ‘Star Wars’ saga?

Perhaps little Anakin could be de-whined somehow?

question of the day: What movie are you most looking forward to in Autumn 2011?

Mon, Sep 12, 2011

Okay, this is it. Summer is over. Back to school. Back to work. Put on a sweater and get serious.

question of the weekend: How are you dealing with — or avoiding — the 9/11 anniversary?

Sat, Sep 10, 2011

In a way I’m glad I’m not in New York this week: the 9/11 remembrances and retrospectives have been painful enough on this side of the Atlantic, and I can only imagine that the looking-back is even more intense in the city where some of the events of that day happened.
