It was originally titled *Boy of Pigs*, which captures the near-risibility of a movie that attempts to conflate the sexual awakening of one lonely adolescent with so traumatic an event as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
Surely this is the greatest satire of the American presidency ever made for film. It’s kinda like *Being There,* but far more terrifying: instead of a wise, gentle idiot becoming president, here it’s an incurious, perpetually adolescent idiot who ascends to the highest office in the land. Surely this would be a horror story if it were true…
Oh my god and wonder of wonders, here we have a studio movie — a drama! — starring not one but two actors-of-color. God, what a terrible phrase. Don’t we all have a color? Okay: two actors who aren’t the usual medium peachy-beige of those who typically get to star in studio movies unless their name is Denzel Washington.
Compulsively compelling, in the same way that you just can’t help but glance through the Weekly World News while you’re standing online at the supermarket checkout.
Do screenwriters bother with characterization or motive for Old Scratch? Rarely — the Prince of Darkness is supposed to just coast on his rep as the Ultimate Bad Dude, and yet those selfsame screenwriters must, by storytelling necessity, declaw him, prevent him from taking full advantage of the hellish forces at his command.
Wag the Dog is satire, and its object of ridicule here is not politicians or the media but the gullible and ignorant American people….
