The Royal Shakespeare Company production of Hamlet in which David Tennant is now starring in Stratford-upon-Avon will transfer to London for a run starting December 3, through January 10, 2009. Tickets go on sale at 10am London time tomorrow, Friday, September 12. Get ’em while you can.
There Will Be Blood slaps you in the face. It’s Joe Pesci in Goodfellas raging, “Do I amuse you? Do I entertain you?” in that way that suggests that it could not give two figs what you think of it.
This is one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen, and that’s not something I say lightly. It’s practically Shakespearean in its exquisite foolishness and comedic intrigue.
Ah, now here we have the genuine thrill of traveling with the Doctor: visiting the past. The future is cool and all, an undiscovered country, but history… ah, history is a storied place we never get to visit. Unless we’re with the Doctor.
Oh, thank the gods. Thank crazy Walt Disney’s head in a cryogenic freezer. Thank the army of producers and FX geeks and writers and cast and studio execs and focus-group gurus and everyone else who made this prepackaged, ready-for-synergy-marketing, lowest-common-denominator junk cinema the most cheesalicious, escape-a-riffic it could be.
This is classy gothic horror, old-fashioned in the best way: there are no CGI specters, just mysterious footsteps and distant cries and movement in the shadows and hushed whispers and slamming doors.
Elvis Presley takes a job as a roustabout at a carnival, gets slapped by a lot by girls with frighteningly waspish waists, and sings corny carny songs. In superbright Technicolor! Silly movie.
If last Saturday night’s sneak-preview audience is any guide, this could be Julia Roberts’s biggest movie yet. Everything she did onscreen, everything she said either elicited ardent routs of laughter or sent what could only be called worshipful undulations rippling through the crowd. The thrall in which Roberts held these people frightened me. I’m sure execs at Universal Pictures are already peeing in their collective pants with anticipation over this weekend’s box office. What can I possibly say about *Star Wars* that hasn’t already been said a hundred times? George Lucas’s modern fairy tale must be one of the most discussed, most analyzed films of the century…
‘Love and a bit with a dog,’ that’s all audiences want, according to Philip Henslowe (Geoffrey Rush), owner of London’s Rose Theater. A bit of romance, a bit of comedy — isn’t that really all that movie audiences, too, are after? Shakespeare in Love has both in spades, and it’s the first film of its kind to win Best Picture since 1977’s Annie Hall.
