It’s true: Joss Whedon of Firefly and Buffy fame is in the process of creating a new musical serial for the Web. It’s called Doctor Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog. Geek-a-licious, no? It will star Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion, and Felicia Day, and it will come at us as a three-part, 30-minute serial. (Whether that means three parts of 10 minutes each or three parts of 30 minutes each appears uncertain: I’d guess 10 minutes each, though.)
There’s an official site — which at the moment features nothing but the poster to the right — and already a fan site, even though little is known about the project beyond what I’ve just noted here. Not that a lack of information ever stopped fans from being fans.
I’m intrigued by Doctor Horrible not just as a fan of Whedon and Fillion but as a watcher of how the Net is changing how entertainment is produced and distributed. The established TV networks and film studios appear to be terrified of the Web’s potential — and I think it’ll be up to creative types like Whedon to show them the possibilities… while cutting them out of the action at the same time.
Good times.
