Carey Mulligan on Sally Sparrow and ‘Doctor Who’

I’m not at all surprised by the Oscar buzz Carey Mulligan is getting for her astonishingly rich performance in An Education. Because I saw her in the multi-award-winning (Hugo, BAFTA, etc.) Doctor Who episode “Blink,” in which she is so entirely captivating that she makes us forget that David Tennant barely appears in it at all.

I had the chance to speak with Mulligan recently at a press event for An Education, and I couldn’t resist asking her about “Blink” and the possibility of returning to the show for a Sally Sparrow encore.

MAJ: If Stephen Moffat asked, would you go back and be Sally again?

CM: [laughs] I’d have to change my hair.

as Sally Sparrow, left, and as herself today

I loved doing it. It was about two weeks of just running around screaming at things. Yeah, if he asked me back, I’d go back.

MAJ: I think fans would really be happy to see you come back...

CM: Aw, that’s nice. It was great fun, completely different from anything I’d done before.

MAJ: It was tough because it was an episode without the Doctor, and you completely carried it. I think that was the thing that stunned fans the most.

CM: But then your friends aren’t too impressed. I tell them, “I’m doing Doctor Who!” and they gasp, “What’s David Tennant like?” And you go, “I dunno, he was nice for a day.”

[I’ll have more on Mulligan on ‘An Education’ soon.]

how cool is that!

she's gonna be too busy I think, tho

What amazes me, is how she came out of nowhere in 2005, and is now being considered for an Oscar four years later. I remember watching My Boy Jack on PBS a year or two ago with the intent of watching Dan Radcliffe in something other than Potter, but I was much more impressed with Mulligan. I think she was in all of 3 scenes, but I remember how subtle her performance was compared to her role in Pride and Prejudice. I was really looking forward to seeing more of her.

Awww... I so love you.

I just came over to peep at your blog cos I liked your bio-blurb on Rotten Tomatoes. Particularly the Hollywood bit, cos I'm a bit allergic to Hollywood's lesser endeavours. But now I see you're also a Doctor Who fan! An American one, like me!

Consider yourself bookmarked.

I saw Blink for the first time a few months ago, and was totally blown away, both by Mulligan's stunning performance and the brilliance of the episode in general. I'd already heard the buzz about An Education, but seeing Blink really brought home to me how much of a treat An Education was going to be - and when I saw An Education over the weekend, it was everything I hoped it would be. Kudos to Mulligan. She'd certainly be welcome back on Who anytime.

Hello,
I totally love "Blink"!!
It is so deliciously creepy
and I still feel chills
whenever I see a statute!!
Thank you.

Funny story: When I first saw this episode, It was about eleven at night, so after it my fiancée and I crawled in bed to go to sleep. I kept thinking "don't blink" and then making myself blink because I felt like a silly child. So I lay, gazing up
at the cieling. I was getting quite sleepy, and did one of those two to three second blinks. I opened my eyes again, and WHOO!! Was I awake then! Suddenly instead of just the pleasant white cieling six feet above me, there was a huge black FACE like ten inches above my face. Adrenaline hit my system, and needless to say, as the nightingale brother said in the show: "I am too scared to blink!" One and a half seconds later, my eyes adjusted, and I realized what was really going on. My fiancée was trying to hand me a Teddy bear, so he was holding it above my head and waiting for me to take it. I let loose with a good string of very expressive expletives, but it took about five seconds for me to be able to rationally convey what had just happened. Needless to say, we lay awake awhile after that. Me from massive levels of adrenaline, he fro
laughing hysterically. :-/ haha

*from not fro. :-) Also, I have it worse than the previous poster: I have that adrenaline rush now from statues AND Teddy bears!! Haha

check out Carey Mulligan in her new movie out soon. become a cool fan like me hah http://bit.ly/9vkzYY
