DVDs to give: ‘The New York Yankees 2009 World Series Collector’s Edition’

FOR THE SPORTS FAN/releasing 12.15

There are always way too many DVDs coming in than I possibly ever review, but since ’tis the season to be giving, I thought it was worth pointing out some of them to you, in case you’re stuck for gift ideas for the people on your list. (Or even to give as gifts to yourself. My own Christmas shopping does tend to drift into “one for you, one for me” if I don’t consciously tamp down that impluse.)

If I were gonna be a baseball fan, I’m in the right place for it: the Bronx. I ride past Yankee Stadium every day on the subway: I watched with fascination as the new stadium was built. (Which required bulldozing a park where neighborhood kids played baseball: nice move, Yankee organization.) But I’m not, so I’m totally the wrong person to judge whether the eight-DVD New York Yankees 2009 World Series Collector’s Edition is any good, except that I can say that it’s official Major League Baseball stuff, and isn’t that what baseball fans usually want? The official description is:

Every complete game from the 2009 World Series will be available to own in this one-of-a-kind 8-DVD collector’s set. Each definitive 2009 World Series game is presented in its entirety, preserving the complete, unedited footage of every World Series game and key postseason games–plus exclusive locker room celebrations and interviews.

I, frankly, cannot conceive of watching a sport event again when the outcome is already known, but I do know some otherwise sane, intelligent, and interesting people who would slaver all over this set. You probably do too. (It could also be good for pissing off fans of the Mets or the Red Sox.)

FYI, there’s also New York Yankees 2009: Season of Pride, Tradition & Glory, a single-disc retrospective of the baseball year for the team, from the first pitch of spring training through the tickertape parade after the World Series win, featuring interviews, game highlights, and exclusive footage. It’s not listed on Amazon, for some reason, but it’s available at the official MLB site.
