awards season has officially begun…

I don’t remember ever receiving any for-your-consideration materials this early in the season, but DreamWorks Animation must be feeling some intense pressure this year, because they’ve gotten the jump on everyone else. Last week I received a full-color brochure — complete with invites to FYC screenings in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and London — for How to Train Your Dragon. DreamWorks is pushing the film for Best Animated Feature and Best Picture as well as a slew of technical categories.

It’s too early for me to start thinking about best-ofs yet: there are way too many movies still to come this year. It’ll be interesting to see whether this early grab for attention pays off for DreamWorks, and if any other studios will follow suit.
