what the frak! ‘Caprica’ cancelled!

I just learned from Keith in comments that Caprica has been cancelled. From a statement from Syfy via The Ausiello Files:

“The remaining first run episodes of Caprica – airing Tuesdays at 10/9c – will be removed from the schedule as of next Tuesday, November 2,” said the network in a statement. “These final five episodes of the season will be re-scheduled to air at a to be announced time in the first quarter of 2011, and will conclude the run of the series.”

“We appreciate all the support that fans have shown for Caprica and are very proud of the producers, cast, writers and the rest of the amazing team that has been committed to this fine series,” said Mark Stern, EVP of original programming at Syfy. “Unfortunately, despite its obvious quality, Caprica has not been able to build the audience necessary to justify a second season.”

Bastards. Frak them. “Despite its obvious quality”? Frak that shit. If Syfy really believed in the show, they’d have promoted it better, harder, more. But they’d rather just air crap like “professional” “wrestling” and reality junk about ghost hunters. They had a good thing with Sci Fi Fridays… hell, they had a good thing with Sci Fi, never mind this Syfy nonsense.

Syfy could have had the next Mad Men with Caprica. Mad Men’s ratings during its first season were as “poor” as Caprica’s have been. But AMC stuck with it and promoted the hell out of it, which worked because the quality was there. Syfy could have figured out a way to sell Caprica to a larger audience than the usual geek crowd. But they never bothered.
