‘Doctor Who’ thing of the day: the lost Craig Ferguson ‘Doctor Who’ dance opener

If you watched the recent episode of The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson on which Matt Smith was a guest — you can still see the whole thing here, via YouTube — then you saw Ferguson open the show by explaining that the way he wanted to open the show had been quashed by lawyers at the last minute, because it used the Doctor Who theme music… which had not been legally cleared for use.

When the video of the rehearsal for this supposedly awesome opening number did not immediately show up on YouTube, I figured the whole thing was a big joke, that there never was a musical number and this was just Ferguson being his usual weird and unpredictable self. But now the video has shown up online… and I still wondered, as I watched this, if perhaps this was a put-on after the fact, something Ferguson and his team threw this together precisely because the joke got away from them and crazy Doctor Who fans were clamoring to see Ferguson sing and dance about Doctor Who. But watch this, and see why I figure this has got to be real, something actually prepared on that day two weeks ago:

Best bit from the song:

This is why the show is so beloved by geeks and nerds:
it’s all about the triumph of intellect and romance
over brute force and cynicism
