question of the day: Is Hollywood trying to kill the DVD rental business?

Reader Ken writes:

My wife and I rented Bridesmaids from Redbox just to see the supposedly-hilarious extras and outtakes. Imagine our chagrin when I clicked on the bonus materials and something popped up that told me all extras were reserved for purchased copies, not rental copies! What the heck? Is this the beginning of a sinister campaign by the studios to kill rentals. They never learn, it seems.

What do you think? Is Hollywood trying to kill the DVD rental business? What other evidence — if any — do you see for such a plot?
