Norm Feuti’s comic Gil addresses the obvious, simple reason:

When I hear people complaining that poor, fragile, sensitive male egos will get bruised, I am reminded of the arguments for censorship: oh, of course, we are all right, but some people could be adversely affected…

Really. What would a female Doctor harm? (Particularly given how much the show’s been driven into the ground lately anyway. Fan loyalty has already either evaporated or hardened, depending on the fan.)
