London photos: Arlington Square

Another square I visited during the Open Garden Squares Weekend a couple of weeks ago. This is Arlington Square, in Islington, a garden designed and maintained by the residents who live on it, who reclaimed it several years ago from disrepair. (Click here for a larger version of the photo above.)

The garden’s poet in residence, Ian McEwen, wrote some short verses to “illustrate” the blooms:

Ah, tranquility:

I’ve been looking at their website. The map from the mid-1800’s is interesting. Street names have changed in odd ways. Or Google Earth is wrong. East Wharf Road on their map is Eagle Wharf Road now and Wenbourne is now Wimbourne for example.

These are for streets that are in their same place…not for cleared away areas that perhaps were bombed to smithereens in WWII.
