It’s time — after my nine-month-but-also-kinda-three-year-hip-injury odyssey — for me to start getting back into shape now that I can almost, just about, walk properly again. But I’m having trouble ramping up my workouts, because I’m lazy as hell and way out of practice. And I’m not sure that a rewatch of 2015’s hilarious and weirdly poignant Results will help, like, at all. Not that that will stop me.
In this dryly funny anti rom-com, about two prickly and complicated professional gym rats (Cobie Smulders and Guy Pearce) and their odd new client (Kevin Corrigan), everyone is a hugely vulnerable mess and the emotions are very raw. It’s all bracingly off-kilter yet full of a curious humanity… everything we’ve come to expect from writer-director Andrew Bujalski, surely one of the most intriguing American filmmakers working today. (Also unmissable from him: 2018’s Support the Girls and 2013’s Computer Chess.) (Read my 2015 review.)
