It’s August, which means it’s Edinburgh Fringe time. I’ve always wanted to attend what is planet Earth’s largest performing-arts festival, and yet, somehow, I’ve not yet managed it, even after living in the UK for 12 years. (I give myself a pass for the last few terrible years, but there were plenty of opportunities before then that I somehow missed, too.) But I’m determined to get there at some point.
What location-specific cultural event would you love to travel to?
Maybe you’re burning to attend Burning Man in Nevada, hopped up for Oktoberfest in Germany, or down to boogie at Carnival in Rio?
(You can also discuss this at Substack or Patreon, if you prefer. You don’t need to be a paying subscriber to comment, but you will need to register with either site to do so.)

burning man is high on my list, but so is next year’s total solar eclipse in north america – and i know i’m going to that.
I’ve got a hotel room already booked in Erie, PA for the eclipse in the totality zone. Fingers crossed for clear skies that day.
Edinburgh Fringe is what popped immediately to my mind, too, especially since I’ve had friends performing in it the past couple years (everyone check out the puppet show Bill’s 44th!) and we’re planning a trip to Edinburgh—my first to Scotland—this fall.
Burning Man fascinates me too—there are things about it that attract and repel me in almost equal measure. Maybe better to go with something that’s more overall attraction.
Edinburgh Fringe, for sure. I go to a bunch of shows at our local Fringe Festival every year, but Edinburgh seems like it’s next level. Also yes to Oktoberfest.
If I could be 22 again, definitely Mardi Gras; at 50+, perhaps Jazz Fest.
And La Tomatina sounds like fun.
