The Daily Stream becomes the Daily Scream for spooky season!
Horror finds new cinematic expression in French filmmaker Julia Ducournau’s shocking and visceral Raw, from 2017. A shy, virginal student’s first confrontations with the grownup world of sex and self-determination comes just after a college hazing ritual that forces her to eat meat for the first time in her life: she was raised strictly vegetarian. Well, no more. Ducournau turns the the awful, violent things girls do to their own bodies — waxing, purging — outward on others, and casts female desire as ravenously predatory in a way that few films have ever had the audacity to do. This film is not for the squeamish. Really. (Read my 2017 review.)
