Nice Canadian doctor (Evelyne Brochu) goes to Palestine to help the poor disenfranchised people there. But 2013’s Inch’Allah — the title translates as “Allah willing” or “God willing” or, more loosely, “hopefully” — is far from a white-savior story. Writer-director Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette tells a striking slice-of-life story set among Chloé’s life in Jerusalem, where she lives, and her work in a jury-rigged medical clinic in Ramallah, which she crosses the border every day to get to, and her long, hard path to the realization that good intentions can barely begin to counter the tidal wave of history she has chosen to surf.
