Doctor Who thing of the day: “The Gunpowder Plot” game

Doctor Who The Gunpowder Plot

Did you know there’s a series of downloadable Doctor Who adventure games available for free — in both PC and Mac versions — if you can connect via a U.K. IP address? The whole bunch is available via the BBC’s official site for the show, including the very latest, just in time for Bonfire Night tomorrow: In “The Gunpowder Plot,” the Doctor, Amy, and Rory find themselves right in the middle of Guy Fawkes’ plan to blow up Parliament.
I’ve been fooling around a little with the game this morning: it’s like watching an episode of the show. There are lots of 360-degree interactive locations you can run around as you play different characters — so far, I was able to play both Rory and Amy in various situations — and solve puzzles. Gameplay is intutive, and the puzzles are simple enough for young children to solve… which means it’s no great challenge at all for grownup fans. But Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, and Arthur Darvill do supply the voices, and there’s some Doctor Who-ish banter to be enjoyed in the cutscenes.

Definitely worth a look if you can get it for free. If you cannot connect via a U.K. IP address, you can purchase a downloadable copy — PC only, alas — for ten bucks from Legacy Games. And that could be worth it if you’ve got kids who will get a kick out of it.

(If you stumble across a cool Doctor Who thing, feel free to email me with a link.)
