no, Hollywood is not to blame for Newtown (and other adventures in social networking)

What my followers on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ saw today:
• Journalism — when done right — can be dangerous and threatening to those in power. Maybe that’s why so many so-called journalists don’t bother. (Spoiler: Engel is an authentic journalist.) Richard Engel and NBC News team freed from captors in Syria

• Art! Now confusing, offensive, possibly demonic. Outcry Brings Down Murals in Atlanta Art Project

• Oh, FFS, no. The entire planet watches violent Hollywood movies. And plays Silicon Valley’s violent games. Yet the vast majority of mass shootings happen in America. Maybe we need to look at what’s unique about America… Is Hollywood to Blame for Newtown?

• And this, too: “I get a bit twitchy when people who make their living using the first amendment to advocate for more wars and no gun laws (as Scarborough did for a long time) suddenly decide that we need to crack down (how, exactly?) on OTHER PEOPLE who might create films with fake violence in them.” And Just What Are We Supposed To Do About The “Entertainment Moguls”?

• I never understand this. If movies and TV shows are disturbing in the wake of Newtown, then shouldn’t they *always* be disturbing? (I did wonder whether Jack Reacher would be postponed entirely, since its plot revolves around a mass shooting, but it seems like that won’t happen.) School shooting compels entertainment changes
