question of the day: Why are so many Christmas movies so terrible?

Santa Claus Conquers the Martians

Now we come to that time of year when the cinematic faithful find ourselves pondering a great mystery:
Why are so many Christmas movies so terrible?

There are always all sort of “good” and “reasonable” explanation for why so many films in general tend to be very bad, but Christmas movies seem to go well beyond this. Schmaltz and gloppy sentimental tend to rule, and the realities of how real people actually cope with what can be a very stressful time of year as much as a festive one are all but ignored. A movie that breaks the rule — like this year’s marvelous The Fitzgerald Family Christmas — only seems to underscore how awful most other Christmas movies are.

Any ideas?
