I’m sure there’s a fascinating historical reason for why this giant door appears to have been built several feet above the sidewalk level, but I can’t imagine what that reason could be. (Near Seven Dials.)

There were stairs that are gone now?
Maybe there were stairs that are no longer there.
Doors open in. Base at truck (lorry) bed height. Reflector strip at door bottom That would most likely be a loading dock.
Looks like a loading dock to me – you see similar doors at the backs of large retail stores, for trucks to pull up and unload without having to drop stuff down to ground level, though they are usually equiped with piers too. I’d say this one was designed to load and unload stage scenery Seven Dials is the heart of theatreland!
It’s just a loading dock. Really cool door though! :)
Great pratfall for a comedy though. Person gives a dramatic speech, storms out in a huff, right out the loading dock.
