The elvish twins who introduced us all to the concept of the electric harp played by elvish twins last year with their rendition of the Game of Thrones theme are back:
I don’t know what the rusted car in the woods is meant to represent. Perhaps it’s an homage to the grungy locations of the original series…
Thanks to Gareth for the heads-up.

…I’ll be in my bunk…
Didn’t the first Doctor park the TARDIS in a junkyard?
Question for the group: why is all of nerdom wetting their undies over the Game of Thrones theme music? It’s boring. Just a simple, childish melody repeated over and over, and not even in an interesting, Revel sort of way.
I’ve never found it especially compelling either. But I don’t mind watching them play it. Also, this kid’s rendition of it is pretty spectacular.
Yeah, see, no, that doesn’t do anything for me. The piece doesn’t move, doesn’t build anything but volume and octaves, and overstays its welcome.
Fair enough. Some of Ramin Djawadi’s work on the actual music cues for the shows is a little better. It’s certainly better than anything else I’ve heard Djawadi do, but that’s not a very high bar to clear, IMO. I think a composer like Harry Gregson-Williams or John Powell could have come up with something much more interesting for GoT, generally speaking.
I’m rather fond of it myself, and I’m VERY particular about music. You’re right in that’s it’s very simple, but I like how it builds on itself, as well as the “layers” of sound that you can hear. Combine it with the amazing intro, and I get why it’s popular.
I agree that the title sequence is very well done. So well done, in fact, that I feel it’s being let down by the utterly tedious theme music.
*shrugs* Music is so darn subjective. I think 99% of what is produced today, especially the typical “top 10” type stuff, is terrible crap. Obviously, enough people actually DO like stuff like Kesha, Lady Gaga, Nikki Minaj, etc. to make these people lots of money. And probably make them think they actually have talent(Yes, I’m aware of Gagas past. Too bad her radio stuff is junk)
Still, I’m the guy who can’t stand anything by the Rolling Stones or Queen, so listen to me at your peril. ; – )
It’s repetitive, at worst. But the best marching music works with a rhythm and tempo that GoT uses to great effect. And that’s what it is, it’s a call to arms for a vast war of power and honor and lust and dragons and life and death.
It’s definitely not a march. Or, if it was intended to be a march, the orchestration is all wrong and the tempo is way too slow. But the rhythmic structure is too open for a 6/8 march. I think it was written to be vaguely Renaissance-y. But I’m not getting any of that power/lust/dragons/life/death stuff. Mostly I get drunk medieval peasants about to pass out in a tavern. :-)
No, that would be Tyrion passing out in a tavern. But I digress…
I agree with Dr. Rocketscience that it isn’t a march, but it certainly evokes marching and everything else you’ve said. Personally, I love it. It, and the ‘Welcome to Lunar Industries’ track from Moon are some of my favourite pieces of film/tv music.
…for some reason, I’m jonesing for a stick of Doublemint gum!
