‘Indy 4’ scoop? Natalie Portman to play Indy’s daughter?

mother and daughter?

So, the other half of my movie adventures on Saturday was a revival showing of Raiders of the Lost Ark at another classic New York movie house, the Paris Theatre. This is one of my foundational films, one of the movies that made me the geek that I am today, and it has been, oh, 15 years since I saw it on a big screen. Glory, glory, hallelujah.

This may have been my best movie day ever.

But it got better. After the film, Karen Allen was there for a Q&A with the crowd, and she dropped a delicious tidbit about the long-rumored, hotly anticipated Indiana Jones 4: Natalie Portman has apparently been cast to play Indy’s daughter. (I’ve been developing in my head an Indy sequel that features David Duchovny as a nerdy diplomat who’s Indy’s son, but I guess I’m too late for No. 4. Maybe No. 5…) And there’s more: Allen said that just now, while watching Raiders again, something she hadn’t done in years, she suddenly noticed this:

Marian has to grab her nightie from behind the bed. So even though we see Indy conk out with little more than his elbow kissed, perhaps he wakes up randy in the middle of the night? Could it be, Allen wondered, that Marian Ravenwood is Natalie Portman’s mom?

Cuz, you know, that would be pretty cool. As long as it’s not Willie Scott.

You know, I thought the same thing during that scene. I NEVER noticed that she was naked. I suppose if I had been a 10 year old boy, instead of a 10 year old girl, I would have. Of course, I was also so naive as a child that I was appalled when people implied that Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw were having an affair…

How funny! I always remembered that scene very clearly–perhaps my pre-teen’s dirty mind latched onto anything remotely racy. But it was always very apparent to me, because of that telltale nightie grab, that Indy didn’t sleep that ENTIRE night away!

Goodness, you’re right! The scene registered, but I never really *thought* about what it might mean. It blows away my rationale for why there shouldn’t be an IJ:4 (that is, Indy gets the girl in the third movie) but I’m still not sold on this movie yet. These movies are core to my movie-watching ethos and to have it ruined with a fourth… But I love Natalie Portman! *sigh*
