Even “Serenity”? That seemed the exception to “the every SF movie of 00s being crap” rule.

You can take the haiku another way: good SF makes me want to get out there among the aliens.

Asimov was right
when he noted “eye sci-fi”
is all that we get.

After reading so much Asimov, Stapledon, Clarke, Heinlein and Dick, it is really quite difficult to call a movie like Aliens vs. Predator 2 true “Science Fiction” in terms of what storytellers do with the conventions of the genre. I could go on, but I’m sure anyone reading this gets the picture.

I think Cory Doctorow is very much right when he says that written SF and film/TV SF are totally separate genres; the former is (loosely) an exercise in futurism (“what will the future look like”), while the latter is more concerned with being futuristic (“It’s just like Wagon Train, only with phasers!”).

Geez, MaryAnn, didn’t you see all the demonstrations two years ago?

Oh, wait, you mean the other kind of aliens.

Well, I’m pretty sure Chris Carter said something about those aliens taking over in 2012 so just wait a bit…

Si, she means the other kind of aliens.

PS: We’ve decided that managing this place is going to be too much work, so we’re not going to take over. Instead, we’re just going to hang out and mess with you. For example, those last few seasons of The X-Files? Our idea. Heh.

Whitley Streiber says the same thing. He’s full of shit too.

Well, the Mayans are the one who floated that 2012 number in the first place when they ended their calendar there. Did the calendar maker just get bored and quit? Or did they really figure out that something’s going to happen that day… like the supposed alignment of our solar system’s ecliptic with the galactic equator?

You’re funny, Clay.
