(This isn’t on topic, but was “The Shard” part of the skyline when my wife and I were last in London in March of 2003, just ahead of the Iraq War? That turned out well, didn’t it?)

Speaking of cool plays to go see, I just saw a good review for (yet another!) local production of Assassins, which music I looove, but I have never been able to see performed. It’s playing through July 20th, so I am definitely going to go see it in the next few weeks! (Theater Wit on Belmont in Chicago, if anyone is interested–the Tribune really liked it overall, but had a few issues with the lack of impact on some of the songs.)

This might be my favorite Sondheim musical, at least the music of it (I love the very idea of having John Hinckley and Squeaky Fromme sing a duet but direct the words not to each other, but to their “true loves”), and I have always been a big ole geek on the subject of presidential assassinations (yeah, I’m weird like that, me and Sarah Vowell; read her book Assassination Vacation for a look at people who are much more obsessed about the topic than me).

Also, if I ever lose some of my weight and get a little time, if I see that a local troupe is putting this play on and casting for non-Equity actors, I might actually try out–I’d love to play Sara Jane Moore. “I got this really great gun / Shit, where is it? / No, it’s really great–wait! / Shit, where is it? / Anyway, it’s just a .38 / But…it’s a gun!” It’ll be interesting to see what scenes she and Fromme get, and how the women assassins interact with the men.
