my week at the movies: ‘The Strangers,’ ‘Sex and the City,’ ‘Kung-Fu Panda’

Oh noes! Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman are in jeopardy… in their own romantic lovenest in the woods! Or something! The Strangers [opens wide May 30] is the first film from writer-director Bryan Bertino, and I have no idea who he is either, or how he managed to get his own script greenlighted by a major Hollywood studio. I suspect that will be the biggest mystery of all here.

I am sooo not the audience for Sex and the City [opens wide May 30] — while I am a fabulous freelance writer just like Carrie Bradshaw, I have never spent more than $150 on a pair of shoes, and I cringed when I did that. But I feel an obligation to check this out anyway, and determine whether it’s merely inappropriate for nonfans of the show, or actually wildly antithetical to any female mindset that doesn’t judge a man on what’s in his bank account.
Kung Fu Panda [opens wide June 6] is the movie I’m officially Dreading at the moment, but it seems to have gotten a fairly warm reception at Cannes, so I’m hoping I’ll at least be mildly diverted by it.

I mentioned last week that I’d be seeing the Harlan Ellison documentary Dreams With Sharp Teeth, but I ended up having to skip it because of all the other obligations pressing down before the holiday weekend. But there’s another screening this week, so I’ll try again…

I am seeing Panda and Sex and the City on Thursday, hope they don’t bomb.

Also, “Paris Je T’aime” finally opens in South Africa, as well as “The Bank Job” and “Narnia” – and I have a ton of documentaries to get through, including “Gonzo” and “Joy Division.”

Enjoy your weekend.

Yeah, I loved Kung Fu Panda, and Sex and the City was okay.
