London photo: kiddie magazine mess

Once a month I am tasked with finding the latest issue of a can’t-get-it-in-America Disney magazine for my nephew. This is what I have to face.

I once saw in a supermarket “Pink Magazine”. It seemed to be a thinly-disguised toy advertisment for all things pink. (For girls, naturally.)

Lordy. A custom-made place to trap young browsers for hours. Maybe they’re more likely to buy more than one if they have to look at all of them before they find the one they wanted.

I used to work at Waldenbooks, and those damn magazines that come in a plastic bag always drove me crazy, because at the end of that issue’s lifecycle, we had to pull them off the shelf along with all the others that were being replaced, and then tear open the bags before we could rip off the cover (we got returns credit on the stripped-off covers on all magazines). Such a PITA. And when they were on the shelves, more often then not the kids would rip them open so they could get to the goodies inside and then not buy the darn magazine.
