Just a quick look at the numbers this week:
1. Eagle Eye: $29.2 million (NEW)
2. Nights in Rodanthe: $13.6 million (NEW)
3. Lakeview Terrace: $7 million (dropping 53% in its 2nd week)
4. Fireproof: $6.5 million (NEW)
5. Burn After Reading: $6.2 million
Looks like I’m gonna have to check out Eagle Eye when I return home. My fellow critics don’t like it very much, but it’ll be interesting, at least, to see how the marketing of the film — which makes it look pretty exciting if preposterously Hollywoody — is all that drew in crowds. I think it’s probably down to Shia LaBeouf, who’s got that indefinable It that makes a movie star, makes people want to spend time with him at the movies.
The best per-screen averages of the week went to limited releases The Duchess, at $10,455 on each of 55 screens, and Appaloosa, at $10,357 on eacy of 14 screens. Eagle Eye was third, at $8,319 at each of 3,510 venues.
