BOTTOM LINE: The “jokey” adolescent misogyny of one of the male members of the ensemble and the “she’s just the girlfriend” positioning of one of the women negatively impact the horror genre’s typically fairly good representation of women. The terror of pretty girls isn’t even sexualized here the way it often is.

NOTE: This is not a “review” of The Gallows! It is simply an examination of how well or how poorly it represents women. (A movie that represents women well can still be a terrible film; a movie that represents women poorly can still be a great film.) Read my review of The Gallows.
