BOTTOM LINE: There’s a female coprotagonist, her primary concerns are not about babies or romance, and she doesn’t get naked or have to be sexy. The film is about her being kidnapped, but this isn’t done to motivate a man, and she is definitely not a victim but a human being with agency who has to think her way out of a tough situation. It could be worse.

NOTE: This is not a “review” of Captive! It is simply an examination of how well or how poorly it represents women. (A movie that represents women well can still be a terrible film; a movie that represents women poorly can still be a great film.) Read my review of Captive.
