‘Doctor Who’ thing of the day: IDW comic returns in 2011 with Matt Smith’s Doctor

Comics publisher IDW turns its Doctor Who book over to the Matt Smith Doctor — as well as Amy Pond and Rory Williams — with a new series commencing in January 2011:

IDW’s new ongoing comic book series promises not to dial down the excitement, offering holographic spam fighting Mad Max-esque mercenaries, Victorian Jack The Ripper suspense, penalty shoot-outs against Vikings and Cybernetic Space Pirate Dinosaurs among the many adventures that the Eleventh Doctor will be having. Said IDW’s DOCTOR WHO editor Denton J. Tipton, “There’s going to be something for everyone in this story. For example, fans of the classic series should be on the look out for a classic DOCTOR WHO villain!”

“I could tell you who they are, but I’d have to kill you,” adds Lee. “Let’s just say we’ve been given special dispensation to use them, and we have a killer story – in all senses of the word!”

As big a Doctor Who fan as I am, I don’t follow the comics. Who could this cool classic villain be? It can’t be something as obvious as the Daleks… could it? Though I suppose they would have to get special dispensation from Terry Nation’s estate to do so, since Nation retained ownership of the Daleks: the BBC does not, in fact, control the rights to one of the Doctor’s greatest enemies.

Just a guess, though. What other villain would be cool to see in the comic?
