If you missed the FlickFilosopher meetup this past Saturday, you missed meeting Andy Hughes, who came all the way from Boston to say good-bye to me and who happens to be a huge Doctor Who fan. Hughes is a contributor to the amusingly named Topless Robot, where he recently posted an apologetic for Colin Baker’s Doctor… which is, frankly, much in need. I think many Whovians would agree that C. Baker did not get a fair shake at the role, and Hughes lays out a few good reasons why in “6 Ways the Sixth Doctor from Doctor Who Got Screwed.” From his intro:
The Sixth Doctor was deliberately designed to be a change of pace: brash, verbose, aggressive and manic, his on-screen behavior to become the stuff of infamy among fans. At the time, Baker was enthusiastic and speculated that he might go on to be the longest-running Doctor ever: the following debacle would make that statement seem like some sort of a sick joke, as Colin became not only the shortest-lived Doctor on TV (aside from Paul McGann’s Eighth) but the most controversial as well.
And the first reason (counting down to No. 1):
