Smaug is a magnificent cinematic creation… but there’s no good reason it takes so damn long to get to him.

Is there an overall essence to the idea of The Movies, even if the setting isn’t fantastical, that demands a feeling of unreality?

Now, though, I have to wonder whether hobbits are as hairy all over as they are on their feet. The things I think about…
I gotta go with The Hobbit. I think I might well be happy to have no other movie but The Hobbit to watch this year.
Could Hollywood only get away with such a split when there is an existing and enthusiastic fanbase? Are these splits anything other than moneygrabbing on the studios’ part, a means to get twice the ticket sales out of fans?
