A screaming deluge of metal and rubber devoid of drama, suspense, and elegance. Instead it’s random vehicular chaos enacted with the same energy of a four-year-old smashing his toys into one another.

Nostalgic yet not mindlessly retro, a heartfelt girl-and-her-alien-robot-car action-adventure dramedy that hits all the right notes. Hailee Steinfeld is terrific, and there’s nary a whiff of Michael Bay.
Raiders of the Lost Ark is my most favorite movie ever, and this is its genre, so here it is…

Shia LaBeouf has put himself, in recent years, in a place where the Shia LaBeouf Experience is one of big loud dumb noises in which he runs around yelling. A lot. This is what Hollywood has trained us to accept from LaBeouf, and it’s not exactly the best place for a serious actor to find himself. Not if he wants to be taken seriously.
