trailer break: ‘Universal Dead’

Take a break from work: watch a trailer...

Nope, it’s not another installment in the Universal Monsters reboot, but a new online series that will debut “around March 15th,” according to screenwriter Kelly Parks, whom I “spoke” to via Facebook last night.

The trailer looks pretty impressive for a low-budget effort, and the cast is impressive, too: Gary Graham, D.B. Sweeney... “We were very lucky to get Doug Jones,” Parks told me. (You remember Jones as Abe Sapien in the Hellboy movies.)

The series will eventually be available in a more traditional format, says Parks:

When the full season (about 10 episodes) are released, it will be edited together and released on DVD by Rogue Arts as a feature.

I’ll be on the lookout for the debut of this one -- I’m very interested to see how filmmakers are taking advantage of the Net to do end runs around traditional distribution.

Universal Dead will debut on the Web soon.

I have a friend who is a zombie maniac; has been since before it was re-popular. When 28 Days Later came out, he kept insisting on the clarification; those aren't zombies, they're infected.

This trailer felt like a remake of Day of the Living Dead, but it appears a little too cheesy. I'll see it when it debuts, but it's not going to sate me for AMC's "Walking Dead" adaptation.

That's so weird. I saw whatsisname, Alien Nation guy, in another low budget zombie series pilot a year or so back. I'm pretty sure its not the same one. People were living underground in that one and he was in military fatigues and so forth.

Darabont's Walking Dead series probably broke a lot of hearts with all the would-be zombie series makers out there (of which I confess to being one). Big names and several semi trailers full of cash. Few could make one in its shadow, so good luck to these guys. (It's frustrating; the comic is awful, but it could adapt so well.)

Everything's got zombies anymore.

Next Sandra Bullock date movie? Zombies.

Kevin Costner baseball flick? The outfielder's gonna be a zombie.

Denzel Washington crime drama? Partner's a zombie.

George Romero zombie movie? ZOMBIE CATS! Booya!
