What’s New Scooby-Doo? Complete 1st Season (review)

As if the original Scooby-Doo show of the late 1960s and early 70s weren’t poor enough an example of pointless cartoonery — not to mention a blight on the collective childhood memory of Generation X — this 2002-3 revival demonstrates just how hollow pop-culture nostalgia can be. Shaggy and Scooby, along Velma, Daphne, and Fred, are still those meddling kids sticking their noses into haunted abandoned ski jumps and haunted abandoned roller coasters, and so on, and it’s always a guy in a mask, in one way or another, who’s responsible for the mild bad deeds that prompt their amateur sleuthing. Fourteen episodes — including one that never aired — make up the first revival season, and each one is more forgettable than the last. Extras include “bloopers” and “outtakes,” and are just as inane.
