opening wide today: ‘The Kingdom,’ ‘The Game Plan,’ ‘Feast of Love,’ ‘In the Valley of Elah’

The Kingdom
An elite FBI team — Sydney Bristow and Ray Charles among them — are sent to Saudi Arabia to find a killer. Oddly enough, their target isn’t Osama Bin Laden. So they’re sure to find whom they’re looking for. (my review is here)

The Game Plan
A pro football player (The Rock) gets saddled with an adorable seven-year-old moppet. Someone must actually have pictures of the Rock with a gradeschooler in a felonious position to have gotten him to agree to this. (no, no, no, no, no)

Feast of Love
Greg Kinnear is unlucky in love, until Morgan Freeman comes around to watch over him — and a bunch of other unhappy lovey-doveys — like a kindly angelic cupid. Cuz Match.com is sooo 2002. (This is one of those movies that make me go, “Eh,” about which I have so little to say. Maybe I’ll write up a short review this weekend.)

In the Valley of Elah
Remember that movie with Tom Cruise as the angry screaming wheelchair-bound hippie Nam veteran? The Iraqi-occupation vets in this downer of a crime thriller should be so lucky. (Good stuff. Look for my long review soon.)

One of the “funny” bits in the trailer for The Game Plan has The Rock lisping (while suffering a cinnamon allergy attack) “Boston Rebels… experience the heat!” and then turning and saying to someone off-camera “Who writes this stuff?”

The irony of him asking that question is delicious. Who, indeed.

I like that The Rock is now Dwayne Johnson. He had to have a short, hard name to be a wrestler, but now he wants to be respectable.
