opening wide this weekend: ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Like you need me to tell you to go see Indy. Just go, and go again. I went again on Thursday night, at the Ziegfeld in New York — a movie palace made for event movies — and it was packed with a thirtysomething geek crowd. Sure, there were some kids sprinkled throughout, but mostly, it was notable for how, you know, old the audience was. Like my age (I’m 38). And when my geek gang and I were leaving the theater, the line outside for the 10pm-ish show was more of the same. On a week night.

I don’t like making box-office predictions, but I bet Indy makes $200 million from Thursday through Monday, which would be a record. (I’m not the only one thinking “record Memorial Day weekend.”) And it would be coming mostly, I suspect, not from teenagers but from those of us who were teenagers the first time around.
