a few ‘Doctor Who’ish scenes from Stratford-upon-Avon

One fish-and-chips takeaway place clearly knows what audience it’s catering to at the moment:

Found this in a shop called Past Times, which sells doodads aimed at Anglophiles that recall earlier and more romantic eras. This charming bit of nostalgia apparently hails from the 1950s: it is a tabletop-size replica of a thing that police officers used to lock up suspects in while waiting for transport to the station, and it also contained a telephone for contacting home base. This novelty miniature version contains a telephone:

(Hilariously, there was not one single allusion on this display model in the store to the connection to a certain wildly popular television show, the star of which just so happens to be appearing locally.)

You know, if you want to see a real live Police Public Call Box, go to Earls Court tube station. Take the Earls Court Road exit – there’s one right outside. Funnily enough in the three years I lived in Earls Court I never once saw anyone taking a photo of themselves in front of it, though I was there as NewWho debuted.

I believe Earls Court Exhibition Centre is still hosting the Doctor Who exhibition, too. (That’s the other exit from the station!)

There’s apparently still one in Glasgow, too, according to this blog entry. The actual picture of the blogger with the police box is here, with the blogger standing next to it wearing his “You Never Forget Your First Doctor” t-shirt. Pretty cute.

The Earls Court one is in better condition than the Glasgow one by the looks of things – and it’s a bit more current-TARDISy. That Glasgow picture makes it look like the early series! :) I’m glad there are a few left.

Oh yeah! The Earls Court one actually has the flashing light on top!
