My computer problems this morning have had me freaking out all day: I cannot afford to have a computer upgrade situation be an emergency. So I just went ahead and ordered a new Macbook Pro 15″ laptop — one of those gorgeous aluminum ones — from the Apple Store.
This way, at least, I can do the transition at a human pace, and not in a panic. And since, as I suspect, this old laptop does still have some small amount of life left in it, I can pass it on to a friend who could really use it — even if it dies in a couple of months, it will have given her a couple of months of online and work time that she wouldn’t have otherwise have had.
Still, it’s a fuckload of money at a time when we might be staring at the next Great Depression and I shouldn’t be spending at all. But what the hell: it’s my birthday next week, and a big one. 40!
Happy birthday to me. Ha-ha.

Hey, happy early birthday! That’s an awesome present to yourself. Am very jealous.
Regarding the Great Depression II thing, I wouldn’t be too worried about that now. All signs point to the recession either being over or very nearly so. It may not feel like it because unemployment is a lagging economic indicator, and this is likely to be a slow recovery, but things are looking up. For real.
Anyway, congrats on the shiny new laptop.
