‘Doctor Who’ thing of the day: is that a sonic screwdriver in your pocket…?

As was inevitable, the sonic screwdriver, rejiggered for Matt Smith’s Doctor, is available for your own grubby little fannish hands. I recommend purchasing it, if you must, from Amazon U.K., where it can be had for a mere £22.99. At Amazon U.S. and Amazon Canada, it’s $79.99.

(If you stumble across a cool Doctor Who thing, feel free to email me with a link.)

Sorry USA Who fans! Gotta pay full price! :)

It’s brilliant. Can’t tell you how much fun it is to extend the jaws and it’s got a bit more heft to it, unlike RTD’s Sonic.

It’s a bit weird that you can only operate the Sonic when it’s open by using the hidden switch on the bottom but that’s just a minor thing.

ThinkGeek has it for $26, though they are out of stock atm. The note says they expect new stock on the 27th.

Also amazon has the old design for $18.

Meh. Back when there was “The Sonic Screwdriver”, I might have gone for it. Now there’s “this year’s sonic screwdriver”, and we all know there’s going to be a different one when the sales drop off, just as there was a new sort of Dalek when everyone had bought the toys of the old ones. It’s marketing borrowed from the football clubs (who change strip every year, and fans uncomplainingly buy the new one at five times the price of normal clothing).

Bah, humbug.

BBC America has it for $34.98, but, like ThinkGeek, it’s on backorder.

One of my coworkers already has it. It seems to be well made, but, when you extend it, the only way to activate the lights and sound is to open the end cap and push a button hidden there.

I’ll stick with the prior sonic which I have along with River Song’s version (this one opens up like a Dalek claw for some silly reason – wonder what that says about the Doctor…).

Oh, that sucks.

I didn’t even try to order it. Unless it’s a real sonic screwdriver, I can live without it.

Please don’t let my daughter see this.

My problem is that what I’d _really_ want is an actual, working sonic screwdriver that does all the things that all the sonice screwdrivers have done in Dr. Who over the years.

And I’d like it in green. :)

Hopefully they’ll have one at a decent cost at Comic Con. And I really hope they don’t sell out before I get there…

WANT. Also, CAN’T HAVE. Although as cool as it is, it doesn’t have the pen on it yet like the RTD toy sonics. It’s great for a pen, cause you never lose it, and it’s an awesome conversation starter at work (retail) because customers see it and talk Doctor Who with you, or they ask about it.
