One of the greatest films in the history of cinema may be making a comeback of sorts. Alcon Entertainment announced today it is in final negotiations to obtain all film, television and ancillary franchise rights to produce prequels and sequels to Ridley Scott’s 1982 classic “Blade Runner.”
Alcon Entertainment, which has an output and financing deal with Warner Bros., is best known for the Oscar nominated “The Blide Side” and “The Book of Eli.” It’s upcoming features include the romantic comedy “Something Borrowed” with Ginnifer Goodwin and Kate Hudson, “Dolphin Tale” with Ashley Judd and “Joyful Noise” with Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton.
Perhaps in the prequel, a lonely replicant will be adopted by a kindly Christian lady, who will take him to church and make sure he understands he has a soul, even if it’s only a virtual one. And then, in the sequel, perhaps a replicant no one knows is a replicant will make a desperate cross-country journey through a postapocalyptic landscape to preserve a holy book assuring all replicants that they have souls. Why, the possibilities are endless!
What should be expect from the upcoming ‘Blade Runner’ sequels and prequels?
And try not to cry.
