London photo of the day: Leicester Square cleanup

Leicester Square cleanup
Leicester Square, in the heart of central London, has been undergoing all manner of refitting and spiffing up since I arrived in January, in preparation for all the new visitors that will be hanging around come Olympics time next summer. The work is far from done, but there was a flurry of activity going on this morning that can only be described as the urban-renewal equivalent of sweeping the dustbunnies under the rug as visitors are ringing your doorbell. For just out of frame to the left is the Odeon Leicester Square, a huge cinema that would, just a few hours later, be hosting the gala opening of the London Film Festival. There was, apparently, no great urgency to get the hurry-up work finished before the press arrived for our screening of that gala-opening film — Fernando Meirelles’ 360 — this morning.
