question of the day: Which film would you gift to a child as an introduction to the wonders of cinema?

The Wizard of Oz

I’m stealing today’s question from BBC Radio Scotland’s The Movie Cafe, which recently tweeted:

Which film would you gift to a child as an introduction to the wonders of cinema?

The two that jump right to mind for me are, I think, obvious choices: The Wizard of Oz and Star Wars (the first one, in the original version, if possible). On a big screen, of course. Multiplexes may be awful places these days, but it’s hard to see how someone little will fall in love with movies watching them amidst all the distractions of home.

What do you think? Which film would you gift to a child as an introduction to the wonders of cinema?
