question of the weekend: How do you balance the responsibilities of being a parent with maintaining your own identity and interests?

cute baby

This weekend’s question was suggested by MarkyD, who writes:

Who else here has a kid/kids, and how to you balance being a parent with your own activities and interests? I see too often people turning into parents and abandoning themselves altogether, which is sad. My wife and I have both managed to keep our identities while still being good parents.

So: How do you balance the responsibilities of being a parent with maintaining your own identity and interests? If you don’t have kids, is this something you’ve thought about how you would manage?

I’ve never particularly wanted to have children (and it’s probably too late at this point, so I may be off the hook at last), but I confess that the idea that I would end up losing my own independent life to any children is a prospect I find completely horrifying and unappealing.

You?
