Mostly, at least if it’s anything like the ones where I lived in East Ham, used for calling one’s relatives who are back in (India, Pakistan, Jamaica, etc.). Certainly given a new lease of life by cheap (and sometimes illicit) VoIP interconnects replacing international POTS lines, but dying in many places because of Skype.

There appears to be people from all over the world here in Wood Green… and plenty people without much money. I’m sure there are lot of folks here who don’t have computers and high-speed Net access, so Skype wouldn’t be an option for them.

And it can be even more of a problem at the other end. But Skype is still killing off the market, which means what’s left tends to be dropping in quality. (I get constant probes to my VoIP servers, and one of the things they’re doing is looking for an endpoint in the UK so that they can sell international calls going through it at my expense.)

As cheesy as this looks, it still kinda thrills me to know that this “style” of shop still exists after 40 years in London.
